Here at Siena Ristorante Toscana, we love everything about Italian food and wine culture. We love it so much that we even have Italian food and wine proverbs displayed on the walls of our Tuscan farmhouse restaurant!
One of our favorites is vino vecchio, olio nuovo. Here’s the translation: old wine, new oil.
But what does it mean?
Literally, it means that the best wine is aged wine and the best olive oil is newly pressed olive oil. That’s because aged wine is more fully evolved than “young” wine. And extra-virgin olive oil is always the freshest and most flavorful when it’s first pressed.
But there’s a deeper meaning to this timeless saying. In Italian food and wine culture, you always serve the old wine and the new oil to honored guests because they are of the highest quality.
And rest assured that when you are our guest at Siena, we’ll treat you with this classic Italian proverb in mind!
