If you like Italian food and wine, you’ve probably tasted a “Super Tuscan” at some point.
But what is a Super Tuscan exactly?
Back in the 1960s and 70s, a number of Tuscan winemakers planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the classic grape varieties used in Bordeaux, France. They used those grapes to make what would come to be considered some of the best wines in the world.
Because those grapes weren’t included in the Italian wine appellation system, the wines — even though they were top quality — had to be labeled as vino da tavola or simple “table wine.”
As a result, the Tuscans started referring to them as “Super Tuscans,” top Tuscan wines that came with an officially humble label.
On Tuesday, September 24, wine director Rina and Chef Harvey have selected some of their favorite Super Tuscans to share with you. And Chef Harvey has created one of his best tasting menus to date.
Come taste some of Italy’s greatest wines next week at Siena! Details follow below.
