The Italian language has more proverbs about mothers and motherhood than any other. Or at least it would seem so.

The Italian Wikipedia entry for “madre” includes more than 30 Italian proverbs about “la mamma.”

And that’s not all: It also lists more than 60 quotes from famous authors of the 20th century (not all of them are Italian, though).

The English-language Wikipedia entry doesn’t have even one proverb or literary quote.

The mother is a central figure in Italian life and culture. No member of the family plays a more important role — literally and figuratively.
