Grape harvest in Tuscany around the corner!

grape harvest tuscany 2015

Feast your eyes on those beautiful Sangiovese grapes!

That photo was taken this week in Montalcino, Italy, where grape growers expect to begin picking their fruit in just a few weeks or so.

Montalcino is where they make Brunello di Montalcino, one of our favorite and most popular wines at Siena Ristorante Toscana.

An extremely hot July and August were cause of concern for winemakers there. They feared that their vines wouldn’t have enough water to ripen properly.

But plentiful rain on Monday and Tuesday was just what they were hoping for.

Nearly every winemaker we spoke to in Tuscany this week said that they expect the 2015 harvest to be one of the best in recent memory.

But as they say in the wine trade, it ain’t over until it’s over. They’ll be holding their breath over the next few weeks. They just need another 14 days of good weather (and no hail) to get their perfectly ripened fruit into the cellar.

White wine growers in the north have already started picking this week. Stay tuned for more coverage of the Tuscan 2015 vintage!
