Giant Sea Scallops at Siena

When you think of Siena Ristorante Toscana and Chef Harvey’s deft hand in the kitchen, the first things that come to mind are: great Italian cuisine, great Italian and Californian wine list, and Chef Harvey’s signature dish — the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, the famous Tuscan Porterhouse, the most famous entrée of our restaurant’s namesake, Siena, Italy.

But Chef Harvey is also well known for his superb ability to deliver some of the best seafood that Austin has to offer, like the Giant Sea Scallops, above. Note the rich, verdant color of the extra-virgin Tuscan olive oil that Chef Harvey uses to finish this dish.

When he was studying Italian regional cuisine and working in one Tuscany’s most famous restaurants, Chef Harvey learned that Italians love to eat seafood on Fridays, no matter where they are.

The reason? An ancient Catholic tradition, stretching back to the Middle Ages, calls for believers to abstain from eating meat on Fridays. And although Italy is today a predominantly secular country, the ritual remains as part of the fabric of Italian life.

After all, what better way to end the week than with some great seafood?
